Frequently
Asked Questions
Is IPL Permanent?
There is no
such thing as completely permanent hair removal with any machine
or any type of treatment.
Each
person's hair growth pattern is different and is affected by
many known and unknown factors, mostly hormonal influences. IPL
will cause a dramatic and permanent hair reduction, with
remaining hair re-growth becoming finer and lighter.
However,
most people who complete a course of treatments will find they
get an extremely effective hair reduction during the course and
very little hair re-growth following. Some people get complete
hair reduction with no re-growth and others will require regular
maintenance treatments once a year or so.
How
does it work?
IPL delivers pulses of light into the skin at a specific
wavelength which is selectively absorbed in the melanin pigment
in the hair follicle. The light energy heats the pigment and
effectively disables the hair follicle without damaging the
surrounding skin tissue. Once treated, the hairs will gradually
slip out over the next seven to ten days leaving the skin smooth
and hair free.
It is important to note that IPL hair removal is effective in
removing hairs which are in the growing (Anagen) phase.
Follicles in the second phase (Catagen) and third phase (Telagen)
will not be affected since the dermal papilla is not yet
attached to the follicle itself. As a result additional
treatments will be required once the dormant hairs reach the
Anagen phase.
Is it
painful?
Most people find the discomfort similar to a flick from a small
elastic band on the skin. Comfort levels can be improved by
cooling the skin before and after treatment. Mild redness may
occur on the treated area but this will only last for a short
period of time.
How
long does it last?
IPL offers the latest technology in IPL hair
removal. Clinical studies have proven that IPL technology
is effective in permanently reducing hair growth. It is a
gradual process but once the hair follicle has been treated it
should not re-grow.
How
many treatments are required?
A minimum of six treatments is usually required. Multiple
treatments are needed because only 20% to 30% of hairs are in
the growing stage at anyone time.
How
much does it cost?
Treatment cost depends on the areas treated and number of
treatments required. Over time, compared to a life of waxing or
electrolysis treatment, IPL hair removal can be more cost
effective and certainly achieves faster and more permanent
results.
Is it
suitable for everyone?
Laser or IPL hair removal is not suitable for everyone.
Those with darker skin types have a higher risk of pigmentation
due to the higher melanin content of the skin. You should avoid
sunlight on the treated area for a period of time before and
after treatment.
